This is what the final maze looked like with the girl trapped in between. to accompany the directions, there was a storybook with kayla's images and a few illustrations.

The exhibition

At the exhibition
All the feedbacks only pointed out one major drawback regarding this maze, it was damn concrete for a dream. Even after creating a storybook for the directions and instances in the dream, it was clear as a maze but not a dream. Also, people find my work quite scared that assumes a fullstop really soon. I very much agree to this.

Culture & Dreams

Its nice to discover that a dream is totally unbothered about one's culture! Though we come through two distinct backgrounds with totally different orderliness of thoughts, yet the orderliness of dreams is very very similar.
In my dream last night, the 2012 demise had approached. I was in a canoe when the huge waves finally came & pulled my canoe away somewhere. It was damn beautiful a sight, with water everywhere accompanied by snow (somehow). It was funny how the world came together as one and distances reduced to a great extent. On my right, was a blue whale. The giant literally blue whale's tail was just about to hit water with a great momentum. As it smashed against water, I was thrown high up in the air, but I never landed back. Instead I was floating in the air with avians and celestial bodies- a very little asteroid and I don't remember the rest. Probably I woke up. I love this project even more because it inspires me to sleep in order to dream.
Another dream:
I was a kid and playing with my best friend on the terrace of my very old house. I dream of that house very often. In reality, she had left school and got shifted elsewhere. So in this dream I couldn't believe she was back, so I kept asking her, "How come you're back?" In my conscious, I never realized I miss her. These dreams make it evident that I do.

Kayla Image #3

Here is the next image that I worked on.  This one is touches upon the idea of dreaming and consciousness.  I particularly like the texture of the hair in the face on the right.

Kayla: Image #2

Here is another of my images that I finished.  I really like the slightly unnatural colors that are dream like and the blurriness, especially in the face I think it works well for the ideas of memories in dreams and how the details and the faces can be distorted.

Dreams

Hi Anuja! Remembering dreams is hard!  They seem to slip away as you start to wake up.  But sometimes I have really vivid dreams, and last night I had a variation of a dream that I often have.
I was walking home and these two men told me to come with them, but they looked scary and I told them no.  I was near my door now and they were walking towards me instead of going away like I hoped.  I ran inside and tried to lock the door, but all that was there was a screen door.  The men broke the door handle off and came inside.  My friend was in the house (I dont remember who that person was, whether it was a friend or family member, but I remember knowing them).  But my friend did nothing they didn't call the police or try to help me in anyway they just sat there.  I tried to run in the other room to call the police but my fingers couldn't dile the 911 correctly.  I finally got through but they men heard me talking since the operator couldn't hear my whispers, they took my phone before I could give an address.  I tried to hit and punch them but every time my strength failed and nothing happened.  It was as I was so weak my punch was just pat, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't punch them or hurt them.  It was so frustrating and terrifying.

Another dream:
I was driving at night on long dark roads.  And then my breaks on my car went out and I couldn't slow down.  Then my headlights went out and I couldn't see where I was going, so I jumped out of the car (or it crashed i dont remember, but i got out)  and started running and I could hear whispering like there were people just behind me if I looked back.

A different dream:
In this dream I was a child again, I was talking to my mom but this woman looked nothing like my mom in real life, so that was strange.  Then we were driving in her old yellow car, I was sitting in the backseat still talking to her.  Then she stopped replying, and no one was in the front seat.  Then the car was falling off of a cliff, but I was saved by a great white light.

Also, most of my dreams are harder to describe because they are mostly just a blur and mix of ideas, memories and people but have no structure or form that I can remember.  That is what I am basing my photographs on.

What are some of your dreams that you were thinking of using for the project?

Back to the start- lll

For the third movement, my partner Kayla and me are working on dreams and on the idea of time-traveling in dreams and fading memories. Many of our dreams are a distorted and manipulated result of flashes of memories. So I decided to build up a story of a girl trapped inside her dreams and memories. For this, I’m working on a maze, made up of lego, where the person is in the middle, her memories are the objects surrounding her and to show that she is trying to unravel her identity, the maze has four different outlets leading her to four different situations. This is an abstraction of choices one makes and a random idea of which way we choose to get away.

This is sort of a prototype of what the maze would look like!

A dream sometimes can be involuntary form of reliving memories- complementary/compensatory (Carl Jung, dream theory) and one defies time in dreams being free from any kind of boundary. So I am working on the abstraction of time-travelling, through a story of a person trapped in a dream, composed of her desires and memories and slowly unravelling her own identity. Though the form of execution is yet to be decided :P

Kayla's Work In Progress

This is an image that I have been working on.  Our theme is Memories and Anuja and I have been working on the idea of dreams and memories.  I like to work with portraits, so I have been working on how dreams affect memories specifically faces and how it distorts them.  This image is about a dream that I have of losing someone important, and in my dreams the memories of the details and faces aren't clear.  I used a holga lens on my dslr to get the quality of the holga that I desired.
